Core Knowledge Schools Are Successful in Educating Students

Who
The Core Knowledge Movement started with Dr. E.D. Hirsch, Jr.

E. D. Hirsch, Jr. is the founder and chairman of the Core Knowledge Foundation and professor emeritus of education and humanities at the University of Virginia.

Dr.Hirsch leaped into educational reform after examining studentsโ€™ writing at two colleges in Virginia.

๐Ÿ’กย He concluded that studentsโ€™ successful comprehension is directly related to how well the student can read a text,ย
๐Ÿ’กย but, more importantly, influenced by studentsโ€™ knowledge of a topic.

๐Ÿ’ก Dr. Hirsch developed his idea of cultural literacy, which distilled that reading requires decoding skills AND background knowledge about topics every American needs to know to build unified and knowledgeable citizens. ๐Ÿ’ก

In 1986, Dr. Ed. D. Hirsch founded the nonprofit Core Knowledge Foundation.

โšก๏ธ The Core Knowledge Foundationโ€™s mission is to level the educational playing field for all children.

Dr. Hirsch has published several books, including:

ยท      ๐Ÿ–ŒCultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know
ยท      ๐Ÿ–ŒThe Schools We Need and Why We Don’t Have Them
ยท      ๐Ÿ–ŒThe Knowledge Deficit, The Making of Americans
ยท      ๐Ÿ–ŒHow to Educate a Citizen: The Power of Shared Knowledge to Unify a Nation (2020)

โšก๏ธDr. Hirsch argues in his latest book that when schools in the U.S. abandoned curriculum commonality, the U.S. became a Nation at Risk.

โšก๏ธDr. Hirsch believes all students will improve their comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency by building knowledge in Language Arts, Science, History, Geography, and Math.

โšก๏ธThe Quote I Love from E.D. Hirsch, Jr.:

โ€œIn our current system, schools often hold low expectations for all students, particularly children from low-income families. In many cases, this translates into watered-down curricula.

โšก๏ธConversely, schools that implement curricula based on the Core Knowledge Sequence expose all children to coherent, core content that commands rigor.

โšก๏ธThis provides a foundation for later learning and makes up the common ground for communication in our diverse society.

โšก๏ธAll the most successful educational systems in the world teach a core of knowledge in the early grades.

โšก๏ธAs both research and common sense demonstrate, we learn new knowledge by building on what we already know. โ€
